Chapter

Fifteen

As we left the cruise ship, I pulled out my phone and opened the PADA app, quickly typing in Lucien Devereaux's name. "He's living on Palm Key in the north," I said, showing Kai the screen. "Let's get back to the station and switch out the Ranger for the Jeep.”

Kai nodded, his expression set.

Thankfully, the drive back to the PADA station was quick. I kept glancing at my phone, torn about whether to call Violet. Part of me wanted to ask her about Lucien directly, but another part of me wanted to question him first. I wasn't sure if Violet would give him a heads-up, intentionally or not, and I didn't want to risk it.

Back at the station, Knotly was sitting at his desk, sipping on a cup of herbal tea and munching on shortbread. He looked up as we entered, his eyebrows rising in curiosity. "Found something interesting?" he asked, hopeful.

I hesitated, then shook my head. I couldn’t tell Knotly about Lucien and not Violet. “Not yet, but I’ll let you know when we do.”

Kai and I grabbed the keys to the Jeep and headed out. The vehicle rumbled to life, and we made our way north towards Palm Key. The drive was quiet, both of us lost in our thoughts. The scenery changed as we drove, from bustling town streets to more secluded, upscale neighborhoods.

As we approached Lucien's mansion, it became clear that he lived in one of the most opulent areas on the key. His home was a grand, oceanfront property with a long, winding driveway leading up to an impressive, wrought iron security gate.

Kai pulled the Jeep to a stop and pressed the call button on the gate's intercom, but after several moments of silence, there was no response.

I glanced around, the hairs on the back of my neck prickling. The place seemed deserted, but more than that, something felt off. My magic intuition was spiking off the charts.

"Looks like we’ll have to do this the old-fashioned way,” I muttered, extending my hand towards the gate. The familiar warmth of my magic coursed through me, and I whispered the unlocking spell. There was a soft click, and the gate swung open.

Kai drove forward with caution, the crunch of gravel under our feet the only sound in the otherwise silent surroundings.

The mansion itself was massive, with tall windows that reflected the darkening sky. Kai parked, and we got out and approached the massive front door.

“Would you like to do the honors?” Kai asked, motioning toward the door.

“I thought you’d never ask,” I replied sarcastically. I then knocked on the front door, the sound echoing through the empty air.

We waited, but there was no answer.

"Maybe he's not here," Kai suggested, his voice low.

"Or maybe he doesn’t want to be found," I replied, my eyes scanning the property for any signs of movement. "Let's check around the back."

I wasn’t a stickler for always following the rules, but technically, I’d need a search warrant to unlock Lucien’s door without his permission.
